It’s wild how trips to Austin just take over your heart. You know how some trips make your entire personality, or at least transform you. The capital city sits along the Colorado River and gets 228 sunny days a year. More than the weather, the culture is what attracts every visitor. The city hosts over 300 festivals a year. The SXSW itself drew more than 300,000 visitors at the 2026 event. Let’s see what Austin has to offer for a good weekend trip.
Day 1- The One With Capitol and Museums
One thing we particularly enjoy about a vacation to Austin Texas is how insanely common it is to have a taco for breakfast. Not even the crunchy ones. Austin is particularly famous for its soft tacos, which usually have this nice potato or egg filling. Perhaps this is why we went all cliche and settled for Jo’s Coffee on the South Congress Avenue. The place has a rich, eclectic menu to enjoy in a cosy, chill outdoor setting. We love their soft tacos, to say the least, and the Signature Iced Turbo. The drink is spectacular and refreshing for an early morning sprint.
You are only living under a rock if you have not heard of the famous “I love you so much” graffiti and mural on the cafe’s wall. What is only the cutest love story ever- musician Amy Cook wrote this simple graffiti on the wall for her partner, Liz Lambert, also the owner of Jo’s.
After this sugar x caffeine overdose, head over to the Texas Capitol. The Sunset Red granite/ Texas Pink Granite is the hub for all political activities in Texas. You must have heard the simple saying- everything is bigger in Texas. Of course, even the State Capitol is bigger than the US Capitol by 14 feet. The central rotunda has a circular architectural design. This creates a Whispering Gallery. In the right position, you can often hear someone whispering on the opposite side of the room. The tour is completely free, but a guide will definitely help.
From there you can go to the Mexic Arte Museum. The museum accurately shows how rich the cultures of Mexican, Latino, and Latin American art are. The museum is famous for hosting the longest-running Día de los Muertos- Day of the Dead- festival in the state. Huge parades. Altars. Performances- You name it, and the celebration will be there. Absolutely one of the best places to see in Austin. The tickets are not too heavy either. Adult tickets at the Mexic Arte Museum will cost $8. Senior citizens and students- $5, and those below the age of 12 can get their tickets for just $1. If you’re in on a Sunday, this has to be on your list of activities for the weekend in Austin Texas. Entry is completely free!
This trip is bound to exhaust you. If you want to hunker down for a little bit at a good restaurant for lunch during your vacation to Austin Texas, Taqueria de Diez is your pick. Two taco places in one itinerary does sound risky, but this is not your average place. Of course, the tacos are delectable, but we are stopping in for the Carne Asada Burrito. The meat is tender and grilled—the smoky flavor just takes it up a notch. The flan also gets great reviews from Austinites. The crème caramel is smooth and juicy. You’ll definitely love it.
The next stop on our list is the Museum of the Weird. Eerie, entertaining, it’s everything. One of the biggest sights of the museum is the Minnesota Iceman—a 6-foot-tall humanoid creature frozen in a block of ice. Amidst other oddities of the museum, the collection features authentic shrunken heads and two-headed animals. We won’t give further spoilers, but get your tickets, and this visit is going to be a hit! If you’re planning ahead and need to pack for a trip, make sure to leave room in your itinerary for this quirky attraction—it’s one of those unforgettable experiences that adds a fun twist to any getaway.
Walk out and roam on South Congress Avenue. The street is so famous that even if you’re in for a trip of one day in Austin, Texas, the stops will make the entire trip memorable. We won’t name too many stops- you just need to stop at what vibes with you the most.
We didn’t even need to put too much thought into the dinner aspect of our vacation to Austin Texas—we love the Texas Chili Parlor. If you have seen Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 film Death Proof, you’ll instantly recognize the place. Jungle Julia, Arlene, and Shanna hang out at this parlor and meet Stuntman Mike. The movie did not do wonders, but the food at Texas Chili Parlor will surely do. It is dependable and affordable. Try out Freida’s enchiladas with XX Chili for dinner—superior food!

Day 2- The One In East Austin
East Austin is more grounded in its experience. It is still growing, and businesses are trying to set their foot in the ground. Most of the part is laid thick in murals and indie art scenes. In East Austin, we are particularly biased towards Flat Track Coffee for our breakfast. The cup of Joe is nice, and the breakfast tacos are too good to miss. It is not the most touristy pick, but that also means there’s rarely any wait time. The staff is adorable, too.
Even the Veracruz All Natural food truck is amazing for breakfast tacos. While the area has its fair share of galleries, we love a good stroll down the road and look at the real-life murals and graffiti on the road. East 6th Street et al is amazing for a photo op session.
Your next stop could be the Texas State Cemetery. We love walking in a cemetery and looking at the epitaphs on the graves. You’ll, in fact, find tombstones in the shape of the State of Texas. Since the cemetery only has tombs of people who served in the government at higher posts, the tombstones are funny and political. For example, Texas state legislator Bill Kugle has said, “He never voted for Republicans and had little to do with them.” If you are planning a vacation to Austin Texas, this unique historical spot offers a surprisingly fascinating glimpse into the state’s political past and adds an offbeat experience to your itinerary.
For lunch, you can walk to the Hillside Farmacy. The place is cute and cosy, has great views, and a good space for lunch. If we were you, we’d order the Chef’s Special. But if you are in on a Sunday, try out their $25 Steak Night. You won’t regret it at all! Later, you can go to boutique shops like Charm School Vintage, Plant Party, etc.
Any time after 3, you can go to the Long Play Lounge. The mod basement lounge has live music to offer, and the drinks are nice. Even Kitty Cohen’s is good. The outside patio has a little pool where you can dip your feet and enjoy your drinks. A good respite from the Texan heat.
For dinner, Austin has a big escape too. While most of the food we have been going for is Mexican, for dinner you can go for Japanese fusion. The Kemuri Tatsu-Ya is a great option, just a few minutes of a drive down the road. Surely, the restaurant is hyped, but it lives up to it. The food is very innovative. The fish collars are incredible, and so is the eggplant.

Four Seasons, Austin
We love the Four Seasons. The properties are amazing; the staff is congenial; and the amenities- chef’s kiss. The Austin one is right in the sight of the Congress Avenue Bridge. It is also lakefront, so the views are impeccable. Since the resort also favors Cesar Chavez Street, the hotel is a prime pick in the area. Although the street is busy, the resort will even provide you with sound machines and earplugs. You will def. have a lovely stay.
JW Marriott Austin
The JW is especially close to all the music venues you’ll want to explore in Austin. The views of Lady Bird Lake also help its case as one of the best hotels in Austin. We are in love with the rooftop bar- the vibe is amazing, and the ambiance is very chic.
Hyatt Regency Barton Springs Austin
The Hyatt Regency was recently renovated. The pools have been updated, and there are new Cabanas that are a big hit with recent visitors. The rooms are enshrined in dark patina metals and warm-toned quartz. We love the ATX Bat Experience during a vacation to Austin Texas. With this package, you get the Lake View room plus a few new cocktails. From these rooms, you can take a look at the famous Congress Avenue Bridge bat flight.
