There is a particular kind of quiet that exists in Scandinavia. Not empty, but full.

For over a decade, the UN World Happiness Report has placed the Scandinavian countries at the very top. Not occasionally but consistently. That begs a simple question that every first-world country has not been able to figure out. What have they been doing right? To keep it short, free healthcare and almost a religious bond with their ecosystem have a lot to do with it. The devotee-esque relationship is defensible, too- look at the outdoors! All the activities in Scandinavia go above board to relink your connection to nature. If you are in the mood for Scandinavia Tours in 2026, we have the most fantastical itinerary ever.

Why Should You Visit Scandinavian Countries?

We have clearly hyped the place up- it does not need any, though. The stats speak for themselves. Norway, alone, has a coastline of 63 thousand kilometres. Sweden is the locus of 220,000 islands and Finland- the land of thousand lakes- a gross understatement. 188,000 lakes in an area of 130,681 mi². If that is not enough, at the risk of sounding cliché, here’s why Scandinavia needs to be on your 2026 Travel Bingo.

    1. Architecture

4 billion results on Google for just Scandinavian designs and countless of accommodation inspired by the same. Surely the region is doing something right to have delighted everyone. Of course, the architecture is based on human-centric modernism. Buildings are made sans frills. The biggest part is them prioritizing natural light.

Think of the Oslo Opera House, for instance. This marble roof slopes into the water and lets people walk on the roof itself. Our favorite is the Tree Hotel. It is truly one of the most unique accommodations ever. 10 cabins feel almost suspended in the midst of 10m long trees. More on that later.

    2. Northern Lights

Never has Northern Lights not been on a person’s bucket list. For the unversed, the sun emits solar wind which strikes at the Magnetic Poles. The magnetic field here is obviously the least. These particles excite the atmospheric gas and cause it to glow.

    3. Winter sports

What a high-adrenaline joy! Scandinavia’s winter sports are par exemplar. The Arctic Surfing in Unstad takes you through 5°C waters through snow-covered mountains. With Unstad Arctic Surf. You can book Surf and Stay for a good, long trip. Another great sport on the list is Ice Climbing in Rjukan. The town is renowned as the Mecca of all Ice Climbers. Most of the area is secluded from sunlight for months, which creates 100 frozen waterfalls.

    4. Allemansrätten

While the rest of the world fixates on borders, Sweden has a constitutional right called Allemansrätten, or “The Right of Public Access.” This right guarantees you a freedom unlike any other location. You are legally allowed to hike, bike or camp for a couple of nights on almost any land.

Top Scandinavia Tours 2026 You Must Try Out

    1. Solar Eclipse

    Solar Eclipse | Travel Scout
    Solar Eclipse | Travel Scout

For the first time since 1954, a total solar eclipse would pass over the Taymyr Peninsula in Russia, south of the North Pole, Greenland’s eastern coast, and Iceland. Sweden itself will witness a partial eclipse of 0.8626 in Malmö. The city itself has a crazy biking path of 515km, which itself makes for a bang-on activity.

Now, if you want to see the corona itself and you are wandering in Scandinavia, perhaps Iceland is your best bet. The Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords are simply marvellous and will witness around a minute of total eclipse.

If you want to take a cruise for the event, the Seabourn Ovation will depart from Copenhagen and reach Iceland just in time for the event on its 11th day. The cruise will later reach New York. The Oceania Cruise completes the tour at Grundarfjordur in 14 days.

    2. Northern Lights

No trip to Scandinavia is complete without the spectacle of the Aurora Borealis. We have already established just what causes this marvel, but here’s more on making more on your trip. It is obvious that the Lights are photon reflections, but they themselves work when the air is clear. Stay in remote locations where there’s low pollution. Since the weather is moody too, it would be wiser to visit between October and February. This means a Holidays to see the Northern Lights should absolutely be on your itinerary this year.

Finnish Lapland has developed many lodgings and accommodations with clear roofs to witness the Lights. Northern Lights Village Levi is easily one of the coolest, though. The village is about 16 kms outside the town and has little to no pollution. Each of the 40 cabins has been set up for a clear shot of the North. Of course, the rooms are well-appointed and sumptuously designed with wood-lined walls and electric fireplaces. The piece de resistance is the laser heating tech over the glass that clears away layers of snow of condensation in a click.

    3. Midnight Sun in Norway

In Northern Norway, the sun doesn’t set for months. Take a look at Helgeland, for instance; the area is not on every bucket list. But the sheer gravitas of the Kystriksveien Coastal Route is sublime.

The lack of sun does have its own chink in the armor. Often, natives’ bodies forget to produce melatonin, which takes away the sense of morning and night. There are scores of activities to do outdoors, making the region one of the Best Fun Activities in Scandinavia for travelers seeking adventure and culture alike, but if you are in the mood for indoor activities in Scandinavia, the Lofotr Viking Museum could be a huge hit. We went looking for hygge—a Danish concept of cozy and content. Axiomatically, we were too complacent experiencing the saunas in Skårungen.

Now, most people are concerned about their sleep patterns while traveling to the area. Scandinavia is a pinnacle of hospitality. A signifier of which is the hotel’s use of blackout curtains to help manage Circadian rhythms.

    4. Train Ride in Norway

The Bergen Line crosses the Hardangervidda plateau and peaks at Finse. But pro tip, don’t just ride past it. Finse is a beautiful mountain hamlet and you’d really enjoy a mountain bike ride along the Rallarvegen.

The Flam Railway, on the other hand, is shorter but definitely steeper. It descends 866 meters from Myrdal to Flåm and halts at the Kjosfossen waterfall. Another railway that captivated our hearts was the Nordland Railway. Such an imprint is the view of the Arctic Circle with its many mountains and fjords, it has earned the rightful epithet- train of the midnight sun.

    5. Fjords of Norway

Fjords of Norway | Travel Scout

Where there’s Scandinavia, there’s water. Sans embellishment, every bit of the land of Vikings you fancy has a water body or two associated with it. These fjords run along steep cliffs and a chartreuse of greenery. To truly experience the silence of the fjords, specifically the Nærøyfjord, book the “Future of the Fjords” ferry. The fully electric catamaran has quickly taken over fjord travel. It is so silent that you can never hear the water hitting the rocks.

If that were the end of it, it wouldn’t be Scandinavia. The “Stegastein” Viewpoint is another indelible place that must be on your to-do list. Over the Aurlandsfjord juts out a wide wooden ramp 30m from the mountain, 650m above the clean fjord.

While the serenity is enthralling, we understand the need to thrill. A RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) tour is just what you need to bring things up to speed. These boats are much faster and can get closer to the base of waterfalls like the “Seven Sisters”.

    6. Hans Christian Andersen Experience

It is impossible to be ignorant of the works of Hans Christian Andersen. The remarkable Danish writer created some of the best-known stories of all time. Think of The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling. The globe recognizes his genius at the Hans Christian Andersen Experience located in Odense, where he was born.

The museum was designed by Pritzker laureate Kengo Kuma, who also designed the famous “The Exchange in Sydney. Most of the museums that you see are underground. From the outside, it looks like a series of circular hedges and gardens. Upon entrance, the terrain shifts dramatically. Without spoiling the experience further, we would only say- it is quite a symbolic representation of the dilemma of real and imaginary in the author’s mind.

The entire tour is spatial audio tuned. Meaning, you wouldn’t need to hit the buttons; the headset will always know where you are and give you relevant information. For instance, if you step near the Tin Man, he would gently narrate his story in your head.

    7. Husky Sledding through in the Arctic Circle

Rarely is an experience as electrifying as Husky Sledding. Through the snowy landscapes, you go on a fast expedition with a team of Siberian or Alaskan huskies. Some tours are “passenger only”, as in, you sit on the passenger side. Others are self-driven, where you are in control of the gas and the brakes. While that sounds like hoots, it is an extensive workout. It takes a lot of stamina and can only be done if you are prepared to be as active.

A wiser choice would be to go for smaller groups in activities like the Rovaniemi: Husky Sled Ride and Farm Visit. You get more time with the dogs and a much more personal connection with the musher.

The crème de la crème of the experience is combining it with Northern Lights. Many sledding tours happen at night. Sled through the silent forest under the Aurora Borealis, and you will know what Monarch of all I Survey feels like. Total and complete bliss.

Top Scandinavian Hotels You Cannot Miss

Offbeat hotels are the heart of any Scandinavian stay, and we live for it. Sweden has a hotel built entirely from ice. Another hangs from a tree. Both have waiting lists months long. Let’s take a look at the top Scandinavian hotels that can make your trip all-the-more memorable.

    1. Arctic Bath

The same architect as that of the Tree Hotel, Bertil Harström, along with Johan Kauppi broke the mold by thinking of a lodging around a kallbad or an ice bath. The circular main building is covered in a “nest” of crisscrossed logs. The hotel is built on a pontoon system. This means that in summers, the hotel floats on water. During the winter, the river freezes and provides a solid ground.

The incredible part of the stay is its net-zero footprint. The cabins are either floating or built on stilts on the shore. This means that the entire structure can be cleared away without any impact on the biome. All the cabins are made of local pine and wax and strictly withhold any use of chemical paints.

    2. Treehotel

The Treehotel is a stunning example of what you could do with nature and technology without losing any of its aspects. The hotel is suspended 33 feet above the ground and has a small elevator to haul your luggage up. Most of the interior is in ash wood and has a Scandia chair in a 200 sq. foot room. Not the biggest in size, but the height makes it quite airy. Beds are all embedded to the floor at the perfect place to let you enjoy the Lapland treetops.

A cosy spot in these rooms is the netted roof. The pine tree runs through it, but you can easily put out a sleeping bag to enjoy some stargazing. Since the rooms are quite limited in numbers, you will get a months-long waiting list, but every bit of it is worth it.

fire-warmed restaurant and bar, the paths to which are lined by candles after dark.

    3. Northern Lights Village Levi

We already talked about this stunning vantage point for viewing the Aurora Borealis, but the accommodation is truly beyond all comparison. The Aurora Cabins are, of course, sumptuously equipped for viewing the Northern Lights, but another of our favorite parts is the restaurant. The dining place gets truly dark and cold, but the hotel tackles it with candle-lit paths and a consistently lit fire.

The prices generally start at €439/night, but the hotel has many offers running through the peak season. With some of these offers, you can even get a night’s stay free. The hotel also provides activities like Aurora Hunting by Snowmobile, Husky Safari, etc.

    4. Ice Hotel

Every year, the month of November comes when workers at the Icehotel begin the same extraordinary task of reconstructing this gorgeous hotel. The hotel is kept at a constant temperature of -5°C to -7 °C. Most of the hotel becomes a part of the Torne come spring, but some sit perennially. The IceHotel 365 is open year-round to enjoy the stunning escapes of Sweden.

Since it is remade every year, it allows the chain to play with its themes. The winter of 2025 observed Agatha Christie’s mystery themes. The rooms are primarily made of natural elements. Cozy mattress. Thermal Sleeping bags. Heated Bathrooms.

While it is an insanely stunning stay, most people only stay one night or so. The rest of the visit is primarily booked in the normal temperature rooms. The on-site ice bar has drinks that are served in ice glasses and is even open for non-guests. Definitely a true gem!

    Conclusion

We have made it abundantly clear—no place on earth will make you stop in your tracks like Scandinavia. What does the region not have? Geothermal hot springs and active volcanoes are found throughout the area, not to mention the incredible number of fjords. From chasing the Northern Lights to exploring charming Nordic cities, hiking dramatic landscapes, and discovering unique things to do in Scandinavia, the entire trip translates into an indelible imprint for solo travelers, families, couples, and really everyone. You step foot here, and you will come back a changed person.

Check out our favorite things to do in Scandinavia and the best places to stay. These will take a big load off planning your itinerary. All fun and no work, really!
