New York City’s offices have been taking busy hours ever since Mayor Zoharan Mamdani took office. In a new citywide bus plan with the MTA, A plan to turn Utica Avenue into a world-class bus route is hatching into action.

The route is one of Brooklyn’s busiest corridors. More than 40,000 daily riders on the B46 route await buses that move at a sluggish pace of just 6.9 meters per hour. Most of the delay is caused by traffic-clogged streets, which are made worse by parked delivery trucks and Uber vans. Over the years, many officials who have taken office have made promises to improve the transit with no plan of action to amount to it. Mamdani’s new plan is to quicken the bus transit in the area.

Fast routes are being decided on with dedicated bus lanes that keep buses or other vehicles from hogging each other’s space. This will reduce conflicts with curbside traffic.

How The Mayor’s Office Is Planning On Building The Best Bus System In NYC History?

In the new phase of rapid bus routes, five corridors in Brooklyn, Queens & Bronx will receive major updates-

    • Tremont/Cross Bronx, the Bronx
    • Northern Boulevard, Queens
    • Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn
    • Utica Avenue, Brooklyn
    • Kensington-JFK, Brooklyn, and Queens

These corridors are primary hubs that connect the citizens to jobs and schools. Some also run through major destinations and connect to further possibilities of commerce and residence. With the unnerving traffic in the area, wait times for buses have risen considerably.

New plans to add dedicated lanes in the middle of the street. The lanes will have bus stops on both ends, not parallel. Such a designated space would restrict any other vehicle from hopping onto the bus lane. Additionally, bus stops will no have longer distances in between to reduce transit hours. Subway stations and bike parkings would continue to stand on the other ends of the road system.

The plan has elaborated on both short and long-term improvement ideas. While the action has been announced, the MTA has not yet revealed a closure of the project. Only claims of “research and studies” being conducted has been affirmed so far, which has the people sceptic of the true time of completion.

The skepticism is not totally unwarranted, multiple Office holders since 1950s have added such plans in their manifesto with no fruition tell date. The clearest timeline the MTA has provided is with its projection of 71,900 riders would be able to use an express route on the Avenue by 2045.

In other MTA news, the department is prepared to purchase almost 2500 new buses from its $68 billion 2025-2029 Capital Program. The entire deal will be funded by Governor Hochul and the State Legislature. The move will also eradicate 40% of the old buses still running on mediocre to abysmal performance.

The authority has also planned on installing 300 bus shelters in the NYC area by 2028 and add seatings at 875 bus stops annually. Regular updates on expenditure and performance will be provided along with a performance data withing six to 12 months of completion.
