In a leaked internal memo of United Airlines, instructing reservation agents to handle passenger queries who do not wish to fly into South Florida’s newly renamed President Donald J. Trump International (DJI) Airport sparked mixed reactions over changing the destination airport, which is named after the current President of the United States.

The Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) was renamed to President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 9, following a Florida state law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in March. The rebranding covers the terminals, signage, and the public-facing materials except for the airport’s official code, which will remain under the PBI till August 18. The airport officials clarified that the changes are only made in the airport’s name and will have no effect on the ownership and its operations.

What Does The United Airlines’ Memo Say

According to an internal memo, United told its reservation agents that if a customer expresses reluctance to fly into the newly named airport, staff should “use your empowerment to offer acceptable alternatives such as Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA).” The memo reportedly included a suggested script for agents to use with travelers: acknowledging the request, then offering to look at nearby airports instead, subject to the customer’s agreement.

Per the memo, agents were told to process such a switch as an even exchange, meaning no additional fare would be charged for the change, provided a seat was available on the alternate route.

    United’s Response to Leaked Memo

The leaked memo has triggered many reactions online – some travelers like the added flexibility, others aren’t happy about it at all. United, for its part, has responded publicly without actually denying that the memo is real.

A company spokesperson justified the leaked memo as “poorly worded and not accurate,” clarifying that while United does allow fee-free ticket changes for a range of reasons, its official policy does not include changes based on an airport’s name or three-letter code.

What It Means For Travelers Flying to Palm Beach

Travelers with existing bookings to or from the DJT (or PBI) airport, there’s nothing to worry about – your flights, gates, and schedule will remain the same regardless of the name on the terminal.

For those who wish to make alternative arrangements elsewhere can explore nearby airports – Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) situated 45 miles to the south and Miami International Airport (MIA) located approximately 70 miles away. Both are well-connected hubs with frequent United service, making them practical backups for anyone looking to adjust their South Florida arrival point.

Given the back-and-forth over the memo’s accuracy, the safest approach for now is to call United directly or speak with an agent at booking if you’d like to request a change rather than assuming the “even exchange” policy described in the memo will automatically apply.

Why was the Palm Beach International Airport Renamed after Donald Trump

The renaming itself has been in motion since early this year. Florida lawmakers approved legislation allowing the state to rename major commercial airports, and Palm Beach International was the one selected for the change, following a state law and a subsequent trademark licensing agreement approved by the Palm Beach County Commission in May. Regarding the administrative aspect, the airport’s IATA code is not officially scheduled to switch from PBI to DJT until August 18. Until then, the boarding passes, luggage tags, and booking systems will have the PBI name on them.

Airport officials have said the transition is happening in phases. Digital signage and the website already reflect the new name, while physical signage inside the terminal is being updated gradually as part of the airport’s normal capital improvement process.

What Travelers Should Know Before Booking South Florida Flights

Nothing about your flight, gate, or security screening changes because of the new name. South Florida travel continues as normal this summer. Travelers who prefer not to use the Donald J. Trump Airport may consider nearby alternatives – Fort Lauderdale and Miami remain solid alternatives, though it’s worth calling United directly to confirm whether a fee-free switch actually applies, since the memo’s terms haven’t been fully settled. This story is still moving, so anyone with a trip coming up should keep half an eye on what United and the airport say in the next few weeks.
