Indonesia is cracking down on its New Visa Rules for Social Media content creators who visit Bali on Tourist visas. The Directorate General of Immigration had announced that visitors working as influencers on social media will not be able to visit simply on tourist visas. The move comes after there has been a rapid increase in paid collaboration posts between commercial properties in Bali and influencers. Under the tie-up, content creators have been reaping the benefits of amenities during their stay, which is not permitted on a Tourist Visas. Authorities have been on consistent patrol to monitor any violations. If you are a content creator, here’s all you need to know before booking your tickets to Bali.

What is the Problem With These Influencer Collaborations?

Immigrant officials have stressed that such relaxations are not permissible under their visa rules. Any promotional or endorsement activities are a direct breach of regulations. This does not limit to cash transactions. There is no workaround for it; even in cases of no monetary payments, benefits have been availed. The Directorate General of Immigration gave out an official statement on the 3rd of July, clarifying further,

“This is not always about cash payments. Immigration authorities will consider the purpose of the foreign national’s stay, the type of activity, and whether there is any economic value behind the activity.”

With this new update, more emphasis is laid on foreign visitors engaging in commercial activities in the country on a visitor visa. A visitor visa limits tourists to engaging only in vacation activities. Thus, content that aims to benefit a domestic hotel in lieu of monetary or other benefits is prohibited. Any form of sponsorships, promotion of products, or other means to generate income will be considered a violation.

In addition to this, the department has noted that other professional services delivered by foreign tourists, like photography or makeup services, also provide financial benefits. Previously, Australian travel pages had warned citizens traveling to Bali to have the correct visa to work.

Can Influencers Upload Content After They Leave Bali or Indonesia?

As we said, there is no workaround for it. Even if you have left the country, the uploaded content will still be seen as a violation of your visa. For it to be legible, you must have the right visa for your trip. Penalties in the form of fines and deportations will be levied. In stronger cases, the Immigration office may opt for lifetime bans from entering the country.

What are the Indonesian Authorities Doing to Those Found in Violation?

Indonesian Immigration has set up a special patrol team known as Dharma Dewata in Bali. This team comprises 100 personnel, who will monitor the activities of all foreign nationals and take action against irregularities and violations. According to NYPost, dozens of tourists have been detained by the Dharma Dewata Immigration Patrol Task Force. This was done after patrols of social media posts and hotspots in tourist areas of Bali. The authorities may also investigate the verification of the purpose of stay and the activities tourists engage in to determine if any monetary gain can be associated.

Previously, an American tourist had been detained in March. With Nyepi (Bali’s Day of Silence) in effect on March 19, 2026, citizens and tourists are expected to remain indoors, and all activities, including flights and internet, are suspended. The tourist, Karl Adolf, was detained after he was spotted walking along the Sukawati Village main road.

Clearly, Indonesia has taken a strong stance in expectations of tourists abiding by their visitation rules. With recent updates rolled in, travellers are expected to be aware of the proper channels and regulations.

How do I Legally Create Content in Indonesia?

Most media professionals (filmmakers, journalists, etc.) and content creators need the Single Entry Social Media Visa (Index C5A) as the appropriate entry path. This will help you qualify for any shootings you need to conduct in Indonesia.

What is the Single Entry Social Media Visa (Index C5A)?

This visiting Visa is issued to all foreign tourists from all forms of media professions to conduct media-related activities in the country. You can temporarily enter the country for professional media coverage activities and still be within Indonesian immigration regulations. While it is associated with professionals within journalism and news organizations, it can also be used by content creators, bloggers, vloggers, photographers, and filmmakers who publish their content. Keep in mind that filmed interviews or festival coverage also fall under the same provision.

This has created a stricter distinction between covering personal travel and public content creation. The Visa also offers flexibility for longer projects. While the Initial Stay Permit lasts for 60 days, the first extension gives you 60, and the second provides another 60 days. The maximum stay is limited to 180 days for such endeavors.

The process is done online, so you do not need to visit the Embassy at all. Once issued and approved, the Visa remains active for a 90-day period, within which it must be used. You will also require an Indonesian sponsor with sponsorship documentation to apply. Once you wrap up your priorities and depart from Indonesia, the Visa is automatically cancelled.
